Leeroy Stagger
Leeroy Stagger
Stagger’s songs are snapshots of the significant events and people who have impacted his colourful life; time capsules to be opened and unpacked, all the contents marvelously intact. From rocking out in the early days of Victoria’s punk scene to navigating the emotional repercussions following a heart-stopping car accident, the most poignant moments from each experience are gold dust, saved in the sieve of the Leeroy’s astute songwriting. He modestly states: “I just go where the songs take me,” but clearly Stagger has a highly-calibrated musical intuition. His eleventh album, Love Versus, is a private collection of easily relatable personal moments Recorded in his new studio (built from prize money won at 2015 Peak Performance Project), Stagger isn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves, get his hands dirty and put his blue collar work ethic to good use. Kalle Mattson
Kalle Mattson
Kalle Mattson’s voice is a plume of smoke from a recently discharged gun. Your eyes will search for the hazy updraft while you’re left riddled with questions: “From where did this immense talent come? Who were his inspirations? Who does his hair??” Mattson’s “A Love Song To The City” celebrates his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, where he listened to what he calls the COUNTLESS PERFECT songs of Tom Petty, the captivating storytelling of Stuart Maclean and other influential artists. Mattson, deservedly, has been nominated for Juno and Polaris Music prizes. He sings of sunlight and waterfalls; how can we believe him when he says “folk is dead”? Mattson is as clever, charming and affecting as they come. Never doubt that one snowflake can cause an avalanche.
FOONYAP
FOONYAP
FOONYAP is a mesmer. A one-woman weaver of hypnotic loops and dynamic vocals that magnetically draw bug-eyed listeners into a sticky, wondrous web of sound. A Calgary native, the coloured pins on her musical map mark violin lessons at age four, Mount Royal Conservatory of Music training at eleven, collaborations with Woodpigeon and other highly regarded musical entities as an adult, and forks in roads where her Chinese heritage and classical music training branch out into unfamiliar electronic territories that beg further exploration. For all her insatiable curiosity, FOONYAP has only more pointed questions and an ever-larger collection of specimens to scrutinize. Hers is a lifelong expedition to find the centre of her multi-faceted, musical soul.
